Welcome to LAW! We rescue and rehome dogs, cats, rabbits, horses and many other animals when they find themselves homeless through no fault of their own. We have a no-kill policy. The animals remain in our care until we find the right homes for them.

Animals for rehoming are cared for at our Field of Dreams Sanctuary in Kilfinane, County Limerick (phone 063 91110). Visitors are welcome Monday to Saturday, 11am to 3pm. We also have two shops in Limerick City. Our shop on Parnell Street is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. The shop welcomes offers of good quality clothing and many other items for sale, which in turn helps to fund our Sanctuary. Our second shop, on 51 Roches Street, opened 1st December 2010. We are in the process of expanding our facilities in The Field of Dreams Sanctuary, Kilfinane, so that we can help even more animals. Come and visit us sometime. We have many dogs who would like to accompany you on a walk on our grounds and some ponies, goats and pigs who love visitors. We also welcome educational school visits which can be arranged by ringing the sanctuary. If you would like to volunteer your services, we would love to hear from you, whether you just want to walk a dog or help with painting and general maintenance. Every little helps to place another animal in a safe secure home. Call or come and visit us soon.

THREE LEGGED KITTEN OLIVER NEEDS NEW HOME

Oliver was found on abuilding site with part of his back leg missing. He was just a tiny kitten of approximately6 weeks old. After an examination at thevet we had to give him antibiotics every day to clear the infection and we alsohad to wash his open would daily. Oliver hated this as it caused him a lot of discomfort. He needed surgery to have the rest of his leg removed as soon as he as heweighed enough to safely undergo the anaesthetic. Poor Oliver dreaded havinghis leg cleaned daily and we hated this upset it caused him. When he finally weighed1.5 kg we booked him in for his operation. Today Oliver is 16weeks old, all the bad stuff is behind him. He races around on his three legs, nothing stops this boy. He is now fully vaccinated and neutered and ready to goto his new home. Oliver has the best of both worlds at present; he spends hisdays in the sanctuary and is on foster with LAW staff each night. He stillthinks when we pick him up that he is going go have his leg cleaned but in timehe will forget all that. Oliver will need a totally indoor home with adults, hewould also make a great companion for a female cat as he loves other cats andindeed cat loving dogs also. Oliver needs you, canyou give him a safe home? 063 91110 or 087 6371044

LOTS OF BUNNIES LOOKING FOR NEW HOMES

Top row left to right: Maya, MaJuah, Doris, Claudia
Second row left to right: Michael, Toby, Teresa, Robinson, and Sho.

We have many Rabbits looking for new homes, most have come due to families leaving the country to look for work and some were abandoned to fend for themselves. We hope we can find good homes where these lovely friendly boys and girls will have a big run and lots of good food and attention. We do not rehome rabbits to live in a hutch where they will have little or no exercise as rabbits were never intended to live in a box. We have vaccinated and neutered these rabbits and they are all ready to go to new rabbit friendly homes. Please ring 063 91110 and ask for Ann, our Rabbit Rehoming Lady.

Educational Visit

During the school year, Christina Samways, our Animal Welfare Educational Officer visits many schools throughout Limerick City and County. The visit consists of a power point presentation, a talk on animal welfare and the work of rescue organisations such as LAW and there is an opportunity for questions and answers.

Recently, Christina was invited to give a talk with the Youthreach Students of Hospital, Co. Limerick, who, at the end of the visit, kindly donated cat and dog food, treats and toys and they also built the dog kennel, rabbit hutch and a beautiful cat climbing frame. LAW would like to say Thank You to both the Tutors and Students.

Goodnight Wayne & Lady. Sleep tight.

Today our lovely pig, Wayne Rasher, was found dead in his house. His sister, Colleen lay beside him in grief. They were inseparable. Wayne and Colleen were some of the first residents in the Sanctuary. LAW got a call to say two piglets were running along at the side of a main road. The man who rang caught them and brought them to the sanctuary where they lived in one of the dog kennels until we had a suitable area prepared for them. Wayne and his sister Colleen have been firm favourites with all the visitors to the sanctuary since it opened. We hope Colleen will recover from her brother’s death. Dustin Falabella has moved into the house with her tonight to try and help ease her pain. Run free Wayne.

Lady came to us last April; she was rescued from a scrub field where she had to climb down into a dike to get water to drink. Lady had a very bad old injury to her neck, probably since birth, making access to drinking water in that patch of ground very dangerous for her. To eat grass she had to extend one front leg far forward and the other far backward. Life has always been a struggle for this mare. Her previous owner probably only kept her to keep her in foal which would also put her under more stress. LAW kept her comfortable until she could no longer be kept out of pain. Our vet came yesterday and helped her get to a better place where she will feel no more pain. Run free Lady.

We look after the Old Dogs too

LAW chairperson Marion Fitzgibbon "Another old dog brought into the Vet this evening. She is very thin, missing several teeth, missing some of an ear, has two large neglected hernias and has extensive mange. Difficult to be exact about age but she is ten plus. Very sad to think she has had these terrible hernias for years and has been so badly neglected. We will do everything possible to make her comfortable and look after her for the remaining years of her life. When our main building is finished I hope to have a special area for the "oldies" where they can relax in peace away from the noise of the kennel area. They will have glass doors to let in the light and sun and a small enclosed patio outside. We plan to have the same facility for our old and long stay cats. This is our dream and I hope we can make it a reality."
This is just one reason we need a huge injection of cash to finish our main building. At present it stands a shell, empty, not even an echo, while there are many more dogs needing help. We are unable to finish this building because of lack of funds. It is a serious job but one we hope to see finished sooner rather than later. This builing is waiting for a miracle and at LAW we believe miracles do happen.

Department of Agriculture Grant

Limerick Animal welfare would like to thank The Department of Agriculture for their grant of €25,000 which was especially welcome at this time of the year.

WE REALLY NEED A HOME: Mary & Jinx

Mary and Jinx are siblings. These two are very dependent on each other so we will let both go to the same home for an adoption fee of 100 euros. Jinx is a shy boy and adores his sister Mary. Both are suited to a calm home with adults of a family with older children. They would like a home where they will have access to both indoors and outdoors. They are fully litter trained, neutered and vaccinated and have been in rescue for many months. They really need to find a home of their own.

ADOPTION FEE 100 EURO

SPECIAL CASE TOBY

Toby is a lovely red coated wire haired male terrier. He was found straying or he may have been dumped, and he was taken in by a lady who has kindly fostered him until we can find a very special home for him. Toby is a few years old and is very friendly and good with other dogs. He has one little problem, he is epileptic, which means he has to take a tablet every day for the rest of his life and this will allow him to live an otherwise normal lifestyle. His medication will cost approximately €10 per month and every few months he will have to have a blood test to check that all his levels are correct. Without this Toby will not survive. We need to fine someone to give this great dog another chance.
We need a special person who will be willing to take him on, keep him on his meds and in a nice home where he will be safe, happy and loved. Toby deserves to live too and not to die just because he has epilepsy. Can you offer special case Toby a home? Please call us and we will put you in touch with his foster Mum who can tell you more about this special dog.

FERALS FOR FARMS

L.A.W. DO NOT TAKE IN FERAL CATS at its sanctuary for rehoming but our"Ferals for Farms" is a new programme we are setting up at LAW. We are trying to reduce the unending population of feral cats by finding safe homes for them. IF YOU CAN OFFER A FERAL CAT A HOME PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING. The Ferals will be trapped at their location & then will be neutered before being rehomed. Ideally these cats will be kept in a safe warm shed for the first week at their new homes. This gives the cats time to adjust to their new environment and the new owners that will feed them. If you want to go on our waiting list for ferals or know anyone who is looking for outside cats please phone us on 063 91110. We do not ask for a full adoption fee for these cats but a donation would be welcome.

WHAT'S ALL THIS ABOUT A HOMECHECK?

Many people are still confused as to what we mean by a fully-enclosed back garden. In simple terms, it means your garden must be "dog-proof" so that the dog cannot get out and run loose. Only a walled or suitably fenced garden (no chicken wire) high enough to prevent the dog jumping out will pass one of our homechecks.

A hedge will not do on its own because a determined dog will force its way through or under a hedge. We rely on volunteers to do homechecks for us - please don't waste their time. Before you reserve one of our dogs, do what ever work is needed to ensure your garden will fulfil our requirements. We cannot accept a dog run or invisible fence system as a substitute for a secure boundary. Please understand that we insist on these criteria purely for the dogs' sake. A lot of the dogs in our care end up with us because they've wandered away from home. In many cases, these dogs suffer severe injuries in road traffic accidents while they are roaming, and LAW are left to pick up the pieces. By law it is your duty to ensure that your dog remains on your property and is not allowed out in public unsupervised. LAW promotes responsible dog ownership. We must ensure that our dogs will be safe in their new homes.

DOG TRAINING

LAW recommends dog behaviourist Mark (Alpha K9 trainers). Mark has helped many dogs with problems who have come into our care and with his help these dogs have gone on to find successful homes. Who's the boss in your house? Does your dog take you for a walk?? Is your dog agressive or fearful of strangers??? Mark says " I can come to your home and train you on how to train your dog. Contact me on 085 7377567 and I promise you'll see improved behaviour after the first visit!!! "
